Basic Safety Training
Looking to get into the maritime industry? The STCW Basic Safety Training (BST) course is the cornerstone to maritime training, and is one of the most important and fun courses required. It provides classroom instruction and a hands-on training experience with safety equipment, and is designed for all seafarers with designated safety or pollution prevention duties.
Our 5-day, STCW Basic Safety Training course is comprised of four modules that meet USCG and STCW standards. The modules can be taken together or individually, these modules are:
- Basic Firefighting This is one of the most interesting and exciting courses of the BST modules. This 2-day class teaches you the fundamentals of fire, how it starts, and how to extinguish shipboard fires and minimize the risk of fire in a safe controlled environment. The class is 1 day of classroom theory and 1 day of live fire training. This live training provides excellent hands-on experience using realistic wood fires (Class A) and liquid fires (Class B) to help you gain superior training. The instructors are firefighters with years of maritime experience.
- Personal Survival Techniques (PST) This is possibly the most critical training module of Basic Safety Training. Learn, practice, and demonstrate the skills for successfully using lifejackets, life rafts, and immersion (survival) suits. Training and demonstrations are conducted in the water at the Port of Edmonds.
- First Aid & CPR This one-day course is taught by an experienced medical care provider. It covers basic first aid and CPR using an AED, and emphasizes techniques and methods used while at sea. By successfully completing this course, you will be able to take immediate action upon encountering an accident or other medical emergency.
- Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (PSSR) This module of BST covers the real-world aspects of working on vessels that are crucial to a safe and healthy workplace. Topics covered include emergency procedures, how to understand orders and be understood in relation to shipboard duties, preventing marine pollution, and observing safe working practices. While also contributing to, celebrating, and fostering diversity in effective relationships onboard the ship.
What to bring
You need some basic items to be prepared for this course. For firefighting, we recommend levis/sweatpants and a t-shirt to wear under the bunker gear. Synthetic clothing, tank tops, and shorts are not recommended. A change of clothes is also recommended. A tight seal on the face mask is a must and a requirement for participation. Bring a sack lunch and water. In the pool, you will need to wear swim shorts/shorts (no speedos or bikinis) and a t-shirt at all times. Remember to bring a towel too!
